I know I talk a lot about my favourite bands on here (namely The Black Keys and Neutral Milk Hotel), but there's one more that I rarely mention (and I shall be remedying that today!), and that's The Allman Brothers Band. This band reminds me of being a kid. I listen to their albums and dream of summer days and long car rides, singing along to their songs with the windows rolled down and my hand waving out the side of the car. Their first couple of albums (The Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, At Filmore East and Eat a Peach) are among my favourite albums of all time.

I'm talking about all this today because it's the 29th (at least it is over here), which means it's the 41st anniversary of Duane Allman's death. I always get sad thinking about it because I think the world lost a really talented musician that day, and he was only 24... he had his whole life ahead of him, and he was only going to get better as he went on. From wikipedia:

Howard Duane Allman (November 20, 1946 – October 29, 1971) was an American guitarist, session musician and the primary leader and co-founder of the The Allman Brothers Band, until his death in a motorcycle accident in 1971 at the age of 24.

Duane is best remembered for his brief but influential tenure in the band, and in particular for his expressive slide guitar playing and inventive improvisational skills. His tone was named one of the greatest guitar tones of all time by Guitar Player. A sought-after session musician both before and during his tenure with the band, Duane Allman performed with such established stars as King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Herbie Mann. He also contributed heavily to the 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos.

Duane Allman’s skills as a guitarist were complemented by personal qualities such as his intensity, drive and ability to draw the best out of others in making music. He is still referred to by his nickname "Skydog"

On his gravestone is quoted the following (from something Duane wrote):
"I love being alive and I will be the best man I possibly can. I will take love wherever I find it and offer it to everyone who will take it. . . seek knowledge from those wiser and teach those who wish to learn from me."

R.I.P Duane

So as most of you guys know by now, I am a rabid Black Keys fan, have been since I was 16/17. I saw them for the first time last night with my Emma, and they were awesome!

The opening act was The Royal Headaches, an Aussie band from Melbourne that were really awesome and energetic and fun, I recommend you guys check them out!

I bought a shirt, some badges and their latest album El Camino, with the extra tour rehearsal tracks. I almost bought their poster but it had a giant fucking rooster on it so NO THANK YOU!

It was the best concert I've ever been to, and not just because they're my favourite band. Everyone was so happy - you could look across the stadium and all you could see where people hugging and dancing and singing and having fun, it was the best experience ever. Emma and I spent the whole time singing and dancing to every single song (we were so exhausted by the end of it, but it was totally worth it).

We did not have the best seats, we were a fair bit back but the place where they played was not that big, I think it was like 14,000 capacity so we actually weren't that far from the stage. I did take heaps of videos but to be honest they're not very good (I mean, the sound is excellent but the footage is quite shaky due to a combination of dancing and being so far away, but I'll post one. And I'll also post one from this other girl's. I spoke to her on tumblr, she was in the front row and even she said that it was the most peaceful concert ever. She was right at the railing the whole time and no one shoved her or got in her way or anything. I could see into the crowd and there was like no on full on moshing, they were just dancing and having a blast. So yes, here are some videos from the night on video (highlight would have to be the giant disco ball!). The first one is from the girl, and the second shitty one is mine and it's really short but I just loved the way his voice sounded, especially around the 0:30 mark. So amazing!

God, she still sounds amazing after all these years ♥

oh_deanna: (lana del rey // sorry boo)
"And I remember when I met him, it was so clear that he was the only one for me. We both knew it, right away. And as the years went on, things got more difficult - we were faced with more challenges.

I begged him to stay. Try to remember what we had at the beginning.

He was charismatic, magnetic, electric and everybody knew it. When he walked in every woman’s head turned, everyone stood up to talk to him. He was like this hybrid, this mix of a man who couldn’t contain himself. I always got the sense that he became torn between being a good person and missing out on all of the opportunities that life could offer a man as magnificent as him.

And in that way I understood him and I loved him. I loved him, I loved him, I loved him.

And I still love him. I love him."

Beautiful, beautiful, flawless. I cried at the end. Love her so much ♥

12. Grease

Today is a really weird day. I'm in the mood to do something creative, but for the life of me a when I put pen to paper I keep coming up blank. Also, as it was yesterday - it's freezing! I went to the library today and then when I got home I listened to The Duhks last album 'Fast Paced World'. Here, have a Duhks song (not from the album, but a Bob Dylan cover which I adore): It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding). Beautiful, beautiful music. I think I'm going so start doing update posts of things I come across online / think up / feel like talking about. I've noticed lots of people on livejournal seem to do this, so I'm just jumping on the bandwagon I guess! Today's movie is an all-time favourite, definitely in my top ten... who wants a little Grease lightnin'?

#12. Grease (1978)

“He was sort of special.”
“There ain’t no such thing.”

SYNOPSIS: When wholesome good girl Sandy and greaser renegade Danny fall in love over the summer, they never expect to see each other again. But when they both discover that they're now attending the same high school, social differences challenge their romance.

WHY IS IT ON THE LIST: That's a crappy summary above, but the others were even worse. This movie. THIS MOVIE. I know all the words to all the songs and everytime I watch it with someone else I piss them off because not only do I joyfully sing along to all the songs, but I recite every little bit of dialogue too. It's such an amazing, classic movie. To be honest, I never really cared much for Sandy and Danny - I mean, I do love them, but my favourite characters were always Rizzo and Kenickie. I never even realised until I was older what was going on in that whole scene were the condom broke. And I never even realised that she had a pregnancy scare. Haha I was so sheltered. Anyway, this movie is one of my all time favourites. It inspires joy and happiness and nostalgia in me, and I love that!

success!

Finally completed my sequel to my sad song mixtape - it's called 'The Dark I Know Well' and it's focus is on unsettling songs. I'm rather proud of it, so go and check it out at [livejournal.com profile] theworlditgoes if you're interested. Warning: some songs contain talk of sexual abuse / assault, self harming, suicide and murder.

First of all, let me just get this out of the way:.....

I AM GOING TO SEE THE BLACK KEYS IN OCTOBER MY DAD IS BUYING ME TICKETS FOR MY BIRTHDAY WHICH IS ALSO IN OCTOBER I AM GOING WITH MY BEST FRIEND IN THE WHOLE WORLD (EMMA) TO SEE MY FAVOURITE BAND IN THE WHOLE WORLD (THE AFOREMENTIONED BLACK KEYS). I AM CRYING TEARS OF JOY RIGHT NOW NO JOKE.

Anyway, so tickets when on sale last week but there are still tickets left so I'm going to hopefully get them tomorrow. I am so happy right now. I've loved the Black Keys since I was in year 12, and according to last.fm, I first scrobbled one of their songs (So He Won't Break, apparently) on the 14th of October 2008. It's been a whirlwind romance ever since. In celebration of the fact that I am actually going to be in the same place as Dan and Patrick in October, here are some of my favourite Black Keys songs. If you haven't heard of them before / never really got them, I implore you to give them a chance. They are amazing. They're tight as hell, every single song is amazingly raw and awesome and [insert other awesome sounding adjective here]. They're this perfect combination of garage rock and blues and they're the best. These comments on youtube describes them better than I ever could:

Here they are live, being flawless and amazing as always:

LISTEN TO THESE SONGS. THEY WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. )
oh_deanna: (glee // quinn likes girls)

This was my JAM when I was in primary school. Also, holy crap, I've forgotten how awesome her voice is! That bit in the middle where she just goes for it always sends tingles up my spine.
oh_deanna: (glee // quinn says that's a fact)

Everyone needs to watch this. Wuthering Heights / Kate Nash mash-up. Pretty sure it's going to be impossible to listen to the original Kate Bush song without imagining this video.

Also:
Rude Boy... performed by the Bee Gees
The original version of Beep (later covered by the Pussycat Dolls)

Mostly just mixtape stuff. I burned myself out doing all these mixes for various big bangs, and it just wasn't fun anymore. I had a little spark of inspiration the other day, and I'm working on new mixes. They'll be posted on [livejournal.com profile] theworlditgoes, as usual, but I put a link on this journal too. So far, I've got:
  • Listen Up, Baby! - a punk-y, stompy music kind of mix HERE
  • Life in a Glass House - a Michael Glass fanmix (a character from The Morganville Vampires series)
  • Crave You; 2011 - a mix of my favourite songs this year (not necessarily released this year, just listened to a lot) HERE
  • Untitled - a mix that Emma and Abbey put together when I told them I was making a 'favourites of 2011' mix
They will all be posted before the new year, especially the favourites of  '11.

ALSO: I don't usually do this, but if anyone has any requests, or ideas for mixes, please feel free to leave a comment on this post. Who knows, I may be inspired!
oh_deanna: (mine // peace up)
So first of all, I have the most amazing friends in the world. For my 21st, three of them chipped in to buy me tickets to see the Foo Fighters at the Sydney Football Stadium - I just got back, and let me tell you - my mind was blown. I went with Amanda, who despite not liking the Foo Fighters as much as I do went and had a good time, which was really cool.

I've seen them once before (they were my first concert) and the energy and love and general awesomeness the put into their performances blows my mind. Dave Grohl is such a charismatic frontman, and I love the way he and Taylor bounce off of each other.

This is a little video (one of many) I took. It was just after they'd come back on for an encore. Dave was standing on this giant hydraulic stage 25 feet in the air, and he was singing Times Like These, just him and his guitar. And the whole stadium was singing with him, and it was the most amazing thing.

oh_deanna: (adele // yeah you)

I'm not a country fan, but do I have a soft spot for Shania Twain. And oh my god I love Katie Gavin. Just. Everything she does. I love her cover of this song sfm. ♥

There are so many talented musicians on youtube, it blows my mind. Does anyone have a favourite, or even just an awesome cover a song on youtube? Link me! I love discovering new music.

I have another version of this list made private floating around on my livejournal somewhere, but I've edited it and have actually gotten around to doing some of the mixes on it - hence this new shiny version!

I just finished reading the Darkest Powers trilogy the other day and I am completely and utterly enamoured with the idea of Derek and Chloe. I like that he's not a stereotypically 'good looking' guy. I like that she stutters and that they argue and that it took them so long to figure things out. I've probably latched onto this series so much because Glee is on break right now and I don't have anything else to squee over. The actors used for Chloe and Derek are Hannah Murray and Carter Jenkins. I'm not one hundred percent sold on Jenkins yet, but it's kind of hard to find someone that could really play Derek that isn't super-duper good looking. What else? Um, credit goes to [livejournal.com profile] midnight_road for the lovely textures used on the covers. There are twelve songs, they do follow some sort of chronological order and lyrics are included. I'm looking at the mix now and some of the song choices might seem odd, but I swear they made sense to me at the time! The quotes I used below are the ones that got me hooked on this pairing. As always please leave a comment if you download and do not repost this elsewhere. If anyone would like individual songs uploaded or has trouble downloading the mix, just let me know.

As soon as I had finished my last mix a few days ago, I immediately began planning my next one. I'd already focused on Lily and Severus, so I felt it was time to get to work on a mix for my OTP, Lily and James. And lo, Under My Skin was born. Sixteen tracks, all in one zip - without the obligatory song by The Black Keys, which makes me a wee bit sad. I spent more time then usual agonizing over the song choice and lyrics to use because I wanted to do this pairing justice. I've really thought about the order of songs and unlike my other mixes, there are three clearly defined 'arcs' to this mix. Arc One encompasses the Hogwarts years, when the two were still innocent and had only just begun to notice each other. Arc Two is where they are forced to grow up a bit, and focuses on their love though there is a hint of unrest simmering just below the surface. Arc Three is the beginning of the end. Even though paranoia and fear for each other and their child seems overwhelming, they know that they'll love each other to the bitter end. (Yes, I did get a bit teary making this mix.) As always please leave a comment if you download and do not repost this elsewhere. If anyone would like individual songs uploaded or has trouble downloading the mix, just let me know.

go out with me evans? )
oh_deanna: (shoebox project // burnt toast day)
Yes, you read that right. I have just finished a Lily/Severus fanmix. I have NO idea where this came from. I was sitting there last night, minding my own business, when BAM! My mind was filled with this pairing. I know some people aren't to fond of them, but whatever. So yes. We have here thirteen songs (I loathe and despise uneven numbers -my OCD makes sure of that- but thirteen just worked for this two) that were supposed to be chronological and sort of document the coming together and eventual falling apart of Lily and Severus... but as we all know, my plans never really work out how I, you know, planned them. So this starts off with their relationship, settles into some good old angst about them not being friends, and then documents Severus' struggle as the woman he loves dies and he has to choose a side, blah blah blah. And as usual, there is a song by The Black Keys on here. They seem to be my go-to angst-band, which is bizarre to me because their music always makes me happy. Anyway, please leave a comment if you download and do not repost this elsewhere. If anyone would like individual songs uploaded or has trouble downloading the mix, just let me know.

Hello darlings. Here's the Bellatrix/Sirius fanmix I mentioned in my last to-do-list post. It's been lurking around on my computer for a couple of years now and today I decided to sit down and try and put it together. There were a million and one songs I wanted to put on it but I managed to whittle the list down to fourteen - yay me!. Obviously, there are themes of incest here so if that's not your thing - step away from the fanmix! I set out to make this quite balanced between the two but Bellatrix sort of took over towards the end with the last few songs. As always, please leave a comment if you download, and do not repost this elsewhere. If anyone would like individual songs uploaded or has trouble downloading the mix, just let me know.

cousin, you're the love of my life... )
oh_deanna: (glee // quinn rocks the blue wig)
So here's the Puck/Quinn mix I mentioned a couple of days ago. It started off as just a short mix as usual, but then I kept adding songs - hence the two part zip. Maybe in the next couple of weeks I'll start character mixes for Quinn and Puck. And I'll also probably do a Santana/Puck mix at some point. Apologies in advance for shitty photoshopped covers. As always, please leave a comment if you download, and do not post elsewhere. If anyone would like individual songs uploaded, or has trouble downloading the zip, just let me know.

where it began, I can't begin to know when... )
oh_deanna: (Default)
Remember when I said I wouldn't be making any more mixtapes until after February? SURPRISE!

This one is the first part of a project I'm planning - I'm making fanmixes for a couple of characters from Glee (essentially just my favourites), and then I plan on doing ones for pairings - I ship everyone with everyone so there'll be heaps of these (if I can manage it!). As always, please leave a comment if you download, and do not post elsewhere. If anyone would like individual songs uploaded, or has trouble downloading the zip, just let me know.

oh_deanna: (glee // blaine love)
I've been listening to the Wabler version of Bills, Bills, Bills on repeat since I downloaded it a couple of hours ago. SO GOOD.

(my reaction to hearing the song? see the guy behind Kurt that's all like "CHYEAAAAAAH!" - that was me)

After all the shit going on, it's lovely to just sit back and listen to Darren Criss and get all excited about a new Glee episode and promises of Kurt/Blaine-ness.

Anyone else heard it yet? DO YOU THINK IT'S AWESOME Y/Y? And is anyone else besides me looking forward to the idea that Blaine might have a ~dark side? Methinks I've been influenced by the [livejournal.com profile] glee_angst_meme...
