9. Jawbreaker

As an early mother's day present, I surprised my Ma and took her to see her favourite Disney movie (also the first movie she ever saw in the cinema, over 41 years ago!), Lady and the Tramp (which I also love, though it's not on this list). We had such a good time, she spent the whole morning trying to guess what we were going to do, and she didn't figure out what movie it was until about five minutes before she started. I've been keeping this secret for a month! Clever me. I was feeling sick this morning, but we had such a good day that I'm totally energised now and reading to talk about movie no. 9 - Jawbreaker, a late 90s classic.

#9. Jawbreaker (1999)

"I killed Liz. I killed the teen dream. Deal with it."

SYNOPSIS: In what was meant as a harmless birthday prank, three of Reagan High School's most popular girls, Julie, Foxy, and Courtney pretend to kidnap their friend, the latter shoving a jawbreaker into the victim's mouth to keep her from screaming. Their plan goes awry when the girl accidently swallows the jawbreaker, choking to death. The cool and calculating Courtney tries to cover the crime but is found out by school geek Fern Mayo. In return for her silence, Courtney transforms the gawky Fern into the stylishly beautiful Vylette, leaving the conscience-stricken Julie out in the cold, threatening to set her up for the girl's murder if she breaks her silence.

WHY IS IT ON THE LIST: This is a really awesome movie that I watched for the first time when I was in high school. Not only did I think it was awesome and totally cool, but it also introduced me to one of my favourite bands - Veruca Salt (the movie opens with the song Volcano Girls, which I highly recommend you check out). Actually, the whole soundtrack is awesome - quintessential nineties. The movie itself it like every bitchy high school movie combined into one big epic flick; it doesn't take itself too seriously and that's why it works. Rose McGowan (second movie in a row with her in it!) is totally awesome as the crazy beautiful Courtney, and I've always loved Fern's transition into the bitchy Vylette, and the moment that Courtney realises how much her 'plan' has fallen through. Also Marilyn Manson is in it (albeit briefly, but still!).

OMFG I love this movie so much. This is a girl's night classic. This movie is Rose McGowan post plastic surgery. I heart that Julie Benz of Buffy and Angel fame is in this movie too. Veruca Salt is so amazing. Been a hardcore fan since 1994's American Thighs to 2006's IV. Want them to release a new album and their contribution to the 2007 Breast Cancer Benefit album with Neil Young's Burned. They are one of the most underrated bands.

You know, I actually went to the theater with my mom to go see this movie. We both greatly enjoyed it. I haven't seen it in years though, sadly, but I still smile just a bit whenever I see it coming on tv. =D

You know, I don't remember the music too well, but I have been meaning to create an all-female ipod list and I think Veruca Salt would be a good addition since I haven't heard much from them. =D Thanks~

It's such a funny movie, I love it. It would have been awesome to see it in the cinemas!

Veruca Salt. Yes, you need to listen to them. Their first two albums are their best, by far, because that was when their original songwriter was with them (Nina). After Nina left, Louise took over and while the next two albums are good, they're nowhere near as good as "American Thighs" and "Eight Arms To Hold You". /babble.

Sorry, I just really love this band!
